Located in the Hopewell Community in the northeast section of Monroe County, the Hopewell Volunteer Fire Department had its beginnings in 1987. The Hopewell Ruritan Club was formed on January 7, 1988 for the purpose of raising funds. A Ruritan club is a service club focused on “Fellowship, Goodwill, and Community Service” and is established in small towns and rural areas to make improvements to the community. The first fire department officers were elected on April 14, 1988.

In November of 1988, Dwaine Peters donated land on Federal Road for the new fire hall. Community members met in the basement of Volunteer Federal Bank and in the home of Dwaine & Carolyn Peters. In 1988, the family of Dud Jones donated the departments’ first truck, a 1965 Chevrolet C-30. In early 1990, a 1957 tanker was also put into service.

Fundraising income for 1988 totaled about $8300.00. Ground-breaking for the new fire hall began on August 8,1989; however, HVFD responded to their first call in the fall of 1989. By August of 1990, the basement was complete and ready for firetrucks. The Club/ Fire Hall was complete by Spring of 1992.

In 1995, club members voted to leave the Ruritan National Organization and form the Hopewell Community Club.
